Christian Venier
The Domaine Christian Venier is located in Touraine, in the heart of the Loire Valley, one of the largest and most important wine regions in France: a long vineyard that stretches across the center of the country, from the Auvergne area to the Atlantic coast. The climate is predominantly continental in nature, but influenced by the oceanic regime and the sea breezes that move inland. The presence of the Loire represents another important factor that helps to mitigate the climate and soften the colder temperatures, preventing the risk of spring frosts. The soils have a rather heterogeneous composition. From a geological point of view, the vineyard of Touraine belongs to the vast area of the Bassin Parisien and is predominantly characterized by the presence of gypsum limestone and siliceous sand clays. On this deeper substrate, alluvial deposits and terraces rich in pebbles and sands, created over the millennia by the Loire, rest.
The origins of viticulture in the Loire Valley are ancient. The first vineyards in the Nantes area were planted by the ancient Romans, following the conquest of the lands of Gaul. The tradition of the vine has been preserved over the centuries, also thanks to the work of Augustinian and Benedictine monks, who cultivated these lands and produced wine for ecclesiastical ceremonies and for internal use in the monasteries. The wine of the region experienced a period of particular glory during the 12th century, when Henry II Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, became King of England and was accustomed to serving the wines of his homeland at court. Today the area is among the most interesting in the region, thanks to a production of white and red wines of excellent quality.
After gaining experience at the estate of Thierry and Jean-Marie Puzelat, Christian Venier decided to create his own domaine. In the 1990s, he acquired several plots of land, eventually owning a property of 12 hectares. He then decided to focus his attention only on the most suitable parcels of the estate. He sold some vineyards, keeping only the best seven hectares, which he cultivates with great care and passion. In the countryside, he scrupulously follows the principles of organic farming, using only sulfur and copper, in full respect of the surrounding environment. Among the rows are the grape varieties traditionally cultivated in the area: Chenin Blanc, Pineau d'Aunis, as well as the classics Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay, and Pinot Noir. The management of the vineyard with very low yields allows for the maturation of healthy and ripe grapes, rich in aromas, which give life to genuine and authentic wines, a true reflection of the terroir.
